The Key Trait of Wellness

The key trait of wellness is that it is an active,
conscious, and self-directed process of making choices toward a more successful
and fulfilling existence
. It is a lifestyle and a proactive pursuit of
optimal holistic health, rather than just a static state of being healthy or
the mere absence of illness.

Key characteristics of this process include:

  • Multidimensionality:
Wellness encompasses several interconnected dimensions (commonly physical,
emotional, intellectual, social, spiritual, environmental, occupational,
and sometimes financial), all of which require attention to achieve a
    holistic sense of well-being.
  • Self-responsibility:
Individuals are responsible for their own choices, behaviors, and
lifestyles that influence their health and well-being.
  • Integration
    of healthy habits
: The process involves consistently integrating
healthy habits and behaviors into daily life, such as exercise, good
nutrition, sufficient sleep, and stress management techniques.
  • Self-awareness:
It requires paying attention to one's own thoughts, feelings, and actions
without judgment to cultivate habits that work best for the individual.
  • Purpose
    and meaning
: A sense of purpose, values, and meaning in life
(spiritual dimension) is a central aspect that guides actions and
    decisions.

In essence, wellness is about actively working to achieve
one's full potential in all aspects of life, with the understanding that
improvements in one area can positively affect the whole person.

Key Components of Wellness

Wellness products and services are activities offered to improve personal well-being and appearance, ranging from skincare, supplements, and body care items to treatments such as facials, massages, and aromatherapy. The beauty industry focuses on enhancing appearance through products such as cosmetics, hair care, and fragrances, while the wellness sector addresses overall physical and mental health, often incorporating natural ingredients, preventive care, and holistic approaches.

The key components of wellness include physical, mental, and emotional health.

Physical Health

Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate sleep are foundational to physical wellness. Engaging in physical activity not only improves bodily functions but also enhances mood and energy levels.

Mental Health

Mental wellness is defined by the Global Wellness Institute as “ an internal resource that helps us to think, feel, connect and function; it is an active process that helps us to build resilience, grow and flourish”
(Global Wellness Institute, 2020).

Emotional Health

Understanding and regulating emotions is crucial to maintaining good mental health and overall wellness. Emotional health can be nurtured through self-reflection, journaling, and seeking support from friends or professionals.

The Foundations of Wellness and The Five Key Steps to Mental Well-Being

Wellness was traditionally regarded as the absence of illness and disability. Now it has a wider meaning. It is a broad topic and a vital part of personal growth, focusing on preventing disease but also improving the quality of life.

Wellness is being actively aware of and making informed decisions to live a healthy and fulfilling life. According to the World Health Organisation, wellness is “…. a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” The National Wellness Institute defines it as “a conscious, self-directed and evolving process of achieving full potential.” Wellness, like well-being, is a dynamic process of change and growth, and food has a major contribution to make to this process. This confirms the popular saying, “you are what you eat.The National Institute of Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, define wellness as “ a holistic integration of physical, mental, and spiritual well-being, fuelling the body, engaging the mind, and nurturing the spirit. Although it always includes striving for health, it’s more about living life fully, and is “a lifestyle and a personalised approach to living life in a way that… allows you to become the best kind of person that your potentials, circumstances, and fate will allow” (Stoewen, 2017).

When we discuss wellness in the context of beauty, we begin to view it in a different light—one that isn’t just about appearance, but the overall radiance that comes from feeling good, both inside and out.

The Five Key Steps to Mental Well-Being

  • ·Stay Connected. Maintain strong
relationships and social connections with friends, family, or community groups.
  • Practice Self-Care. Engage in activities that promote relaxation and self-nurturing, such as exercise, hobbies, or mindfulness.
  • Stay Active. Regular physical activity
can improve mood and reduce stress.
  • Manage Stress. Use techniques like
mindfulness and meditation, or deep breathing to handle stress effectively.
  • Seek Help When Needed. Don't hesitate to reach out to mental health professionals if you're struggling.

Perspectives of Wellness

There are different perspectives as to what wellness is, but many important organisations agree that wellness is not limited to health, as follows:

  • The National Wellness Institute defines wellness as: “... an active process through which people become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence”
  • According to the Global Awareness Day, “Wellness is the conscious development of the whole self. Embarking on a wellness journey is a process of searching for the appropriate tools” to make you a healthier and happier human being, plus discovering your own effective methods to use these “tools” for continued growth and development.
  • It is defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as ” ....the optimal state of health of individuals or groups. There are two focal concerns: the realisation of the fullest potential of an individual physically, psychologically, socially, spiritually and economically, and the fulfilment of one’s role expectations in the family, community and place of worship, workplace and other settings“.

The above definitions show that recognising and getting the tools for maintaining an optimal state of health is part of a lifestyle to have a successful existence. This is so because the way you feel about yourself, for example, that you look good, has a psychological effect on you. especially your self-esteem and confidence.

The Eight Dimensions of Wellness

Wellness, in its truest form, extends far beyond the typical gym workout or daily meditation practice. It encompasses a lifestyle that prioritises physical health, mental clarity, emotional balance, and spiritual fulfilment. While it has gained immense popularity in recent years through movements like yoga, mindfulness, and nutrition, wellness has always been a part of human culture. It’s about nourishing every aspect of yourself, recognising that your
internal state affects your external experience.

When we talk about wellness in the context of beauty, we start to look at it in a different light—one that isn’t just about appearance, but the overall radiance that comes from feeling good, inside and out.

The National Institute of Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, defines wellness as “a holistic integration of physical, mental, and spiritual well-being, fuelling the body, engaging the mind, and nurturing the spirit. Although it always includes striving for health, it’s more about living life fully and is “a lifestyle and a personalised approach to living life in a way that… allows you to become the best kind of person that your potentials, circumstances, and fate will allow” ( Stoewen, 2017).

It identifies eight dimensions
of wellness:

  • Emotional wellness. Coping effectively with life and creating satisfying relationships.
  • Physical wellness. Recognising the need for physical activity, sleep and
    nutrition.
  • Financial wellness.. Satisfaction with current and future financial situations and goals.
  • Social wellness. Having a sense of connection and a dependable support
    system.
  • Occupational wellness. Personal satisfaction and enrichment from one’s
    work.
  • Environmental wellness. Good health through pleasant environments that
    support well-being.
  •  Intellectual wellness. Identifying creative abilities and expanding
    knowledge and skills.
  • Spiritual wellness. Expanding our sense of purpose and meaning in life.

However, the Global Wellness Institute limits the dimensions to six, excluding intellectual and occupational dimensions. So, wellness goes beyond physical health. It involves a wholesome approach to living and understanding the close interconnections between the various dimensions of wellness, enabling us to create a living environment that promotes wellness.

Wellness, Cheerfulness and Happiness

There is a Japanese proverb that says "Cheerfulness is the very flower of health", which means that a positive and happy disposition results from good health and, at the same time, contributes to it. This suggests that when your body is healthy, a cheerful attitude naturally follows, and conversely, maintaining a cheerful outlook can improve your physical and mental well-being because happiness can reduce stress and prompt you to engage in healthier behaviours, while good physical health creates the foundation for a positive mindset.

This ancient wisdom is supported by modern research, which consistently shows that positivity and optimism contribute to better health outcomes, including a lower risk for cardiovascular disease, improved sleep, and greater longevity. The quote highlights that while we often think of health purely in physical terms, our mental and emotional states are visible signs of our overall well-being.

When a person is more cheerful, they are in a better state to view things properly. Things may not be as bad as they seem when viewed with a clarity of mind.

Cheerfulness prevents stress and tension. Laughter and being cheerful can reduce stress, tiredness and lack of energy, while stress, anxiety and anger can weaken our immune system, making us more vulnerable to illnesses.

Cheerfulness and laughter share a reciprocal and reinforcing link, where one can lead to the other, creating an upward spiral of positivity. Cheerfulness as a"driver of laughter". It is defined as the basis of good humour and a state of inner peace and contentment. It is a disposition that makes individuals more likely to laugh.

  • Trait Cheerfulness: People who are inherently more cheerful tend to display more genuine smiles and laughter in their daily lives.
  • Positive Outlook A cheerful mindset helps people find humor in challenging situations and see things from a positive perspective, which naturally leads to laughter.

Laughter as a Creator of Cheerfulness physical act of laughter, even when forced, can induce a state of cheerfulness and general well-being.

  • Chemical Release Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin—the brain's natural "feel-good" chemicals—which instantly boost mood and create a sense of euphoria.
  • Stress Reduction Laughter activates and then cools down the stress response, lowers stress hormones like cortisol, and relaxes muscles, leading to a calm and positive mental state.
  • Social Bonding Shared laughter strengthens social bonds and fosters a sense of belonging and connection, which contributes significantly to overall happiness and cheerfulness.
  • New Perspectives Laughter can "loosen up the mental gears," allowing for more creative thinking and a new, less-scary perspective on problems, which helps in maintaining a cheerful disposition even in the face of adversity.

In essence, cheerfulness provides the fertile ground for laughter, and laughter, in turn, acts as a powerful catalyst for deepening and sustaining cheerfulness

Happiness can also have a positive impact on our heart health. Studies have
found that those who are happier have lower blood pressure and heart
rates, decreasing the chance of developing coronary heart disease.9

The most widely recognized framework for the five pillars
of happiness is the PERMA model, developed by Dr. Martin Seligman, the
founder of positive psychology. This model outlines the five essential elements
that contribute to a fulfilling and well-lived life (flourishing), which are:

  • P – Positive Emotion: This involves experiencing
positive feelings like joy, gratitude, and satisfaction, and learning to
cultivate an optimistic outlook on life. It is about building resilience
and savoring pleasant moments, not denying difficult emotions.
  • E – Engagement: This pillar refers to being
completely absorbed in activities that are stimulating and challenging, a
state often described as "flow". Fully engaging in hobbies,
work, or learning new skills helps to build focus and a sense of vitality.
  • R – Relationships: Strong, authentic social
connections with friends, family, and community are crucial for well-being
and a major predictor of long-term health and happiness. Nurturing these
bonds provides support, a sense of belonging, and reduces stress.
  • M – Meaning: This involves having a sense of
purpose and belonging to or serving something greater than oneself, such
as a community, a cause, or a belief system. A life with meaning gives
context to our struggles and amplifies our joys.
  • A – Accomplishment: This is about working toward
and achieving goals that are authentic and meaningful to you, building a
sense of pride and competence. This can be achieved through both major
achievements and the celebration of small, daily wins.

By focusing on these five
areas, individuals can cultivate lasting well-being and move beyond fleeting
moments of pleasure to a more profound sense of fulfillment.
